"There Comes A Time To Salute"
Working With a Difficult Boss
Dr. Dee Soder

Study after study has found a high percentage of bad bosses in corporate America. Chances are that you will work for a bad boss sometime-- if you don't already. Even good bosses don't always have time to explain their reasons. Accordingly, there will be many times you disagree with your boss and can't persuade him or her to change their view.

This is easier if you remember that your boss is right--even when s/he is wrong. It's easier if you like your boss, if you admire them, to say "you got it--I'm on it" or "right away." But unless it is an ethical or legal matter, remember there is a time to salute.

Prospering in today's corporations requires a new way of thinking and new skills. Key to corporate success is identifying mentors who can guide you in your rise to the top. You want wise people who care about your success, who will prevent you from making mistakes and teach you the "ropes."

If you ask successful people about their careers, they will invariably talk about the people who helped and mentored them along the way. Today mentoring is much more often viewed as necessary for advancement, and it has become institutionalized in many corporations. Yet it has been happening informally for hundreds of years.
